A Few Things That Would’ve Improved GTA IV
By Hyperion Ecta
Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the greatest games of our time and probably in the history of the industry. To say that means that there is little wrong with the game and no need for improvement. But all things are not perfect and this is the case with GTA IV. After playing quite a few hours I feel now I can throw in a few things which I think would have improved GTA IV. Now, in no way am I saying that without these things that the game is bad, obviously, but these are just things I’ve thought of while playing this amazing game.
No Targeting System:-
The new cover system and the shooting controls are pretty good, but they have their problems. I think that auto-targeting needs to go. In today’s gaming universe, gamers are experienced in the craft of aiming. There is no need now for a targeting system as most people can handle aiming at their enemies. And the new cover system makes it even more redundant because having the ability to hide in cover gives you time to pick your targets and aim. It’s not really a complaint but more of a updating with the times. Targeting seems to me like a old generation feature that doesn’t belong in todays games. Thankfully you can still perform headshots.
More Things To Do With Money:-
This seems to me like a slip-up by Rockstar. You earn lots of money on your journey through Liberty City, yet have few places to spend it. There is only three clothes stores, a few weapon shops (which you don’t need because of the constant ammo drops) and some car and bike dealers. This just doesn’t seem to fit in with a game which is so large and detailed. It seems to me like there could have been so much variation and customisation that Rockstar could’ve went with. For example, there could be different weapons dealers who offer different weapons and upgrades like enhanced sites and more advanced additions; car modifications (I know, but San Andreas had it) & the ability to buy property and upgrade your safehouses. There are loads of options that could’ve worked.
Rewards:-
This sorta links to the point above. While money is good, more tangible rewards would have been nice. Things like cars, weapons and other perks would have been a nice addition to the story. Sure, there is a couple of instances but it just doesn’t seem like it’s enough. Also, possibly the perks that you get from friends could’ve been integrated into the main story instead of having the game be a damn social experiment.
In-car View:-
This is one of the things I was hoping would be in the game, but alas, twas not (not a spelling error). The atmosphere of Liberty City would be heightened through the windshield of a car. I mean, riding in the taxi is pretty cool in itself. But being behind the wheel of a Infernus while avoiding the cops could be the coolest thing the game had. It would’ve added quite a few new mechanics to the game as well. The shooting from a car would have been interesting but fun none the less. Also, the in-car conversations would add to the realism. Though, the beauty of the city might by dimmed.
Now there is a few suggestions and I’m sure that as I play the game toward it’s conclusion more will appear, and I’m sure that you yourself may have a few ideas. So fell free to share your thoughts.

I completely agree. Also, San Andreas for DLC!!!!
hyperion:
you can turn auto-aim off in the options. I couldnt recommend doing this more… I turned it off last night and the shooting just becomes so much more fun. It actually feels a lot like a shooter now.
Seriously - EVERYONE DO THIS
I… I don’t think the game has autoaimed EVER when I’ve been behind cover, just when I have a situation like Vlad. Also, I would’ve liked a first person view just to see a character up closer, I guess maybe they already thought of that and removed it but I’d have liked it anyway.
I’ll have to turn it off then. Shows how much I look at the options.
It does Auto-aim when you’re in cover, You’ll pop out trying to aim at someone yet the Auto aim will target someone totally different and no amount of stick-flicking will help.
cool, let me know what you think once youve done it. I still have it turned off I think its great.
One thing I do not want to see, or wouldn’t use anyway, is an in-car view. I am constantly reliant on the elevated perspective of third-person driving, and always thumbing the right stick to peek before taking a corner or passing to the left on a hill. Lowering the POV and holding it inside the car would have you stuck in traffic half of the game.
yeah I agree - although I dont mind bonnet cam at all. I find it pretty easy to navigate traffic and judge turns affectively. I usually use the medium view above the car though.
Well, I’ve always been a fan of the in-car view and if a racing game has it, I use it exclusively. I just think it would add to the realism of the game.
imo there is no need for an in car view and the aiming system has improved so much compared to previous years.
I think my auto aim is just off by default..? Maybe I set it off before I started, I can’t remember. I think the car camera is wayyy too low, like Burnout you always crash because the camera is too low for you to judge how to navigate what’s in front of you.
ya i think the whole money situation is retarded, car mods would be AWSOME, but i think the release date would have been postponed, and i dont know about you, but waiting till the 29th seemed like ages!! as far as having an in-the-car car camera view, the one on the hood is about as best as they could do, while not affecting driving and shooting, they could have added it for people like yourself though, because you can choose which view you prefer, and so making another view wouldn’t harm anyone- but as i noticed the on-the-hood view only allows you to aim/look so far to your right and left, and so they would have to have created buttons like San An, to look left and right, but the driving controls rely too much on those buttons, then again they do give you the option of turning the controls back to classic, i dunno, i think rockstar really just wanted to launch their new title, and so they felt missing out on a view extras was a cost they were willing to take… oh and two other things i miss- no flyinf planes! and NO SKYDIVING! whats that about? how much more effort would that take?? all in all, it’s still a good game, maybe there saving all those extras for the next gta, kind of like gta 3, then vice and san an both had more extras added to gameplay
